The science behind the Fragrance Lamp
The Fragrance Lamp also known as Effusion Lamp or Catalytic Lamp is a lamp that disperses scented alcohol using a unique heated catalytic stone attached to a cotton wick. The catalytic combustion wick was originally developed by a French pharmacist in the 19th century for use in hospitals and mortuaries to kill bacteria and to disinfect the air. Once the stone is heated catalytic combustion process begins: the catalytic burner captures and destroys the molecules that carry odours. The mixing of air and the movement from convection ensures that odours are destroyed and at least 67% of the bacteria are killed in a large volume of air. Catalytic lamps purify the air before perfuming it. Simple yet very effective. Using your lamp for 30 minutes of burn time will get rid of any unwanted smells, like after frying chips or cooking fish and transform an average room into a tranquil oasis, emitting a fragrance that will last for hours and purify the air.

How to use an Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamp
Stand your lamp on a spill resistant surface. Remove the decorative lid, snuffer cap and wick/stone assembly. Using the funnel provided, fill your lamp up to 2/3 full with one of Ashleigh & Burwood unique lamp fragrances. Insert the wick/stone into the lamp. Replace snuffer cap to prevent fragrance evaporating. Allow the wick to absorb the liquid for 20-30 minutes. Place your lamp on a heat resistant surface, away from any flammable materials. Remove the snuffer cap and light the stone for two minutes. Do not touch or move the stone when it is lit. Never leave a burning lamp unattended as the flame height may reach 15cm. Never cover the flame with the decorative lid or snuffer cap as you may burn yourself or damage your lamp. After two minutes blow out the flame and cover with the decorative lid. Take caution not to touch stone as it is now very hot, it will remain hot (without the flame) as it continues to draw fragrance through the wick. Your lamp is now working purifying the air from bacteria and mould. It eliminates cigarette smoke, cooking smells and pet odours. You can leave it on for as long as you wish, however it takes approximately 30 minutes to fill an average size room with fragrance. To stop the fragrance simply cover the stone with the snuffer cap. This will prevent remaining fragrance in your lamp evaporating whilst not in use.

Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Oils
The basis of the Lamp Fragrance, and the important fuel which keeps the catalytic process working, is an alcohol called isopropyl alcohol. A very common alcohol, it is the same form of alcohol which is commonly used in hospital anti-bacterial handwashes for example. The other ingredients are distilled water, and the fragrance compound itself, which is a blend of natural, nature identical and plant extracts as components. None of Ashleigh & Burwood fragrances are tested on animals. The Aromatherapy range contains only 100% pure essential oils as the fragrance component.
There is a large selection of unique fragrance oils to choose from. The oils are sold in 500ml bottles. Below are some examples of the different fragrances that can be bought here (https://candlemania.ie/products/fragrance-lamps-and-oils):

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamps answered by our experts from
Q1. How long should I burn my fragrance lamp for?
A1. You can leave it on for as long as you wish, it can be five minutes or five hours. On average, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes to fill a room with fragrance, depending on size.
Q2. How long will a bottle of fragrance oil last?
A2. If you use it in a small lamp for 15 minutes at a time, you will get 80 uses out of a 500ml bottle of oil. One bottle will fill a small lamp four times (filling up two thirds of the height of the lamp) or the large lamp two times.
Q3. Can I use essential oils, diffuser oil or any other fragrance oil in my fragrance lamp?
A3. Unfortunately not. Only Ashleigh & Burwood fragrance oils are to be used, as they are specially developed by Ashleigh & Burwood to work efficiently in your lamp. Other types of fragrance oils would clog up the wick and the lamp would stop working.
Q4. Can I mix fragrances?
A4. You can mix any of the Ashleigh and Burwood lamp fragrances to create your very own bespoke scent.
Q5. I would like to change the fragrance from Sicilian Lemon to Moroccan Spice, but I still have some of the Moroccan Spice left in the lamp. I don’t want the two fragrances to clash – how can I do it?
A5. Take out the wick/stone assembly. Pour the Moroccan Spice oil back into its original bottle, using the funnel provided in the lamp box. please take care when doing so to avoid spillage. Then there are two ways of doing it.
The first method is to leave the wick for up to an hour to completely dry.
The second method is to allow the lamp to burn dry of the previous fragrance. To do so, empty out the previous fragrance back to its original bottle. Put the wick/stone assembly back into the fragrance lamp. Light the stone as usual, for two minutes, then blow it out. The lamp is empty, but the wick is still soaked with the fragrance oil, so you have to let it ‘fragrance out’ completely – it will take a couple of minutes. Then the stone becomes cold as it has no more fuel to keep it going and the wick becomes dry. Now the lamp is ready to use with a different fragrance. This second method is quicker, however doing this too often may cause excessive wear to the wick/stone.
Q6. How long will the wick last for?
A6. The wick will last for 300+ uses or 700+ hours, depending on usage.
Q7. Can I use the Fragrance Lamp when children or pets are around?
A7. Yes, provided you follow the safety instructions and keep your Fragrance Lamp out of reach, so that there is no risk of the lamp being knocked over or touched. Always place your lamp on a flat stable surface. Remember that the stone is hot when in use. Always ensure the decorative lid is on the lamp when it is in use to prevent contact with the hot stone.
